It's a pleasure to announce the participation in our congress of two personalities in this sector.

Richard John Roberts

Title: "The Nobel Laureates Campaign supporting GMOs"
Sir Richard John Roberts is an English biochemist and molecular biologist. He was awarded the 1993 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine with Phillip Allen Sharp for the discovery of introns in eukaryotic DNA and the mechanism of gene-splicing. Some other prizes obtained by this researcher have been the Golden Plate Award of the American Academy of Achievement (1994), the Convocation Award on the Sheffield University (1994), the TIE Boston Legends and Leaders Award (2011) and the Hans Krebs Medal of FEBS (2013). He is one of the principal’s defenders for the usage of GMOs in agriculture among in the scientific community. He currently works at New England Biolabs.

Marc van Montagu

Title: "Plant Biotechnology for an Environmentally Endangered World"
Em. Prof. Marc Van Montagu is a pioneer in plant molecular biology. He is well known (with J. Schell) as the discoverer of the Ti-plasmid and the inventor of Agrobacterium tumefaciens transformation technology, now used worldwide to produce genetically engineered plants. Dr. Van Montagu has received numerous prestigious awards and honours, in particular the Charles Leopold Mayer Prize by the French Academy of Sciences (1990), the Japan Prize for Biotechnology and Agriculture Sciences (1998), the Theodor Bücher Medal (FEBS; 1999), the World Food Prize (2013), and the Iran Agriculture Gold Medal (2015). After his retirement, Marc Van Montagu created the International Plant Biotechnology Outreach (IPBO, VIB-Ghent University) with the mission of supporting biotechnological solutions to the problems of world agriculture, emphasized in less developed regions.
